Prefoglio Castle (also known as Castello di Massaprefoglio) is a striking and isolated fortified complex located in the hamlet of Massaprofoglio, within the municipality of Muccia (MC), Marche.
- Medieval Origins: The original nucleus dates back to the 13th century, likely built by Lombard counts to control the Sant’Angelo valley, overseeing an important underground sanctuary and local mills.
- Da Varano Rule: In 1252, it was acquired by the Duchy of Camerino, which reinforced it as part of the defensive system protecting local milling activities.
- Ruins and Restoration: Today, only the remaining walls—a circular tower and portions of the fortifications—have been restored in the early 2000s.
Environment & Access
The site is situated at approximately 774 m above sea level in a wooded setting, ideal for scenic walks and stargazing due to low light pollution. Access is via unofficial trails, often connected to the Percorso delle Acque of Pievetorina. Trekking gear and proper footwear are recommended.
