Massaprofoglio is a hamlet of the municipality of Muccia, located at 774 meters above sea level. This historically and scenically significant village serves as an ideal starting point for hikes on Monte Massa and for visiting the Torraccia and the remains of Prefoglio Castle.

The Church of Sant’Andrea, likely built between the 12th and 13th centuries, preserves 15th-century frescoes, and the bell tower displays the coat of arms of Giulio Cesare and Giovanna Da Varano, lords of Camerino in the second half of the 15th century.

During World War II, Massaprofoglio was the base of the partisan group “205,” led by Zoran Compagnet (Nicola) and composed of young people from Camerino, escaped soldiers, and former prisoners from the Colfiorito concentration camp.

Today, Massaprofoglio offers a peaceful atmosphere and scenic views, making it an ideal destination for history and nature enthusiasts.

Pantano Shrine and Fountain

The Shrine of Our Lady of Pantano is a small votive structure located near Muccia, in the locality of Pantano, in the Marche region of Italy. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, this shrine stands along a path that leads to the nearby spring of the same name, known for its waters, traditionally believed to have beneficial effects on the kidneys.

According to local tradition, a man once dreamed of the healing properties of this spring and began to visit it regularly. His example gave rise to a custom that brought the local community to process to the spring every year on the Feast of the Assumption (Ferragosto).

From an architectural point of view, the current shrine likely dates back to the last quarter of the 20th century. There is no documented evidence of earlier structures on the same site. The spring lies just below the path leading to the Shrine of Our Lady of Pantano, making the location both a religious and natural point of interest for hikers and pilgrims alike.

The surrounding area also offers other historical and scenic attractions, such as the Castle of Prefoglio, the “Torraccia” (Old Tower), and the Church of Saint Andrew, enriching the experience of those exploring the Muccia area.
