ARCIDIOCESI di CAMERINO SAN SEVERINO
The Church of Madonna di Prefoglio stands near the ruins of the ancient castle of the same name, built by the Da Varano family of Camerino. The church was likely constructed around the 13th century as the castle’s chapel.
In 1996, the building was restored with the help of the faithful, as noted by an inscription above the entrance on the interior wall. However, the two severe earthquakes that struck the area in 1997 and 2016 caused significant damage, including the partial collapse of the bell gable and the appearance of cracks in the side walls.
The portal with a round arch is the only element that stands out on the otherwise plain walls.
Traditionally, the festival took place on September 8th, when the painting of the Madonna, once kept in the church, was carried in procession to the town of Fiume for sacred liturgies.
