The Ancient Da Varano Mill is located at the confluence of the Chienti River, near the town’s defensive walls. The river, which flows through Muccia, was historically diverted and split to flow around the village, serving as a defensive moat (fossa del vallum).

Documented as early as 1502, under the Da Varano lordship, the mill helped establish Muccia as an important center for grain processing, thanks in part to its strategic location along regional roads. In the early 20th century, a hydraulic turbine was installed for electricity production, and the mill operated continuously for this purpose until the mid-1970s, with a brief interruption during World War II.

Today, the Ancient Da Varano Mill has been restored with support from the OSIC Project, and the municipal administration is working to establish it as an information point for visits to the surrounding area and the territory of the Comunità Montana della Marca di Camerino.

Inside, the mill still houses the millstones—one fully operational—the rotating shafts, and remnants of the hydraulic gearing, while outside the feeding basins and wooden conduits are still visible.

The Da Varano Mill lies along the Franciscan Path of the Marche and is a stop on a trekking route connecting it to the Gelagna Mill in the adjacent Serravalle di Chienti area and to Pianpalente in the territory of Camerino.

In the Muccia area, two other mills existed: the downstream one has been fully converted into a power station, while the middle one has been adapted for private residential use.
